A CLINICAL SURVEY ON THE TREATMENT OF THE BLEPHAROPTOSIS

Abstract
The blepharoptosis is a disease which is the drooping of the eyelid and is caused by the weakness of the levator or the Muller¢¥s muscle.
The author had treated 60 patients(71 eyes) from January of 1985 to January of 1991 and the follow-up study was carried out in 44 of them(59 eyes)
The choice of operative procedures was determined by the levator function : When the amout of the levator function was 2-9mm(13 patients, 14 eyes), the patient was treated by the levater resection, and when the amout of the levator function was below 2mm, the patient was treated by the fronta!is suspension(23 patients, 32 eyes)or frontalis transfer(8 patients, 13 eyes)
The followings were the results.
1. There were 43 congenital and one acquired blepharoptosis.
2. The amout of the levator function was below 2mm in 45 cases, and 2-9mm in 14 cases.
3. In the postoperative complications, the lagcphthalmos in sleeping and the ptosis in upward gazing were observed in all cases treated by frontalis suspension or levator resection, and in case treated by frontalis transfer.
The other complications were overcorrection, undercorrection, lid lag in downward gazing, eyelid deformity, notching and sensory disturbance of forehead.
4. The above results have shown that in the case of a high degree of levator weakness, the frontalis transfer was the more effective method of treatment than the frontalis suspension in the correction of the blepharoptosis.
